¿Necesitas algo un poco más difícil? If your learners have been studying Spanish for some time then Show Time Spanish will be the perfect resource for improving listening skills, developing a wider range of expression, learning complex grammar in a simple way, and understanding the Spanish-speaking world.
Show Time Spanish is presented by a Spanish teacher and a team or native speakers. Each lesson is presented in three parts:
- Act 1: a discussion between teacher Mark and the native speaker, delivered at normal speaking speed;
- El Intermedio: an ‘interval’ presented by teacher José which teaches two or three idiomatic phrases linked to the theme of the day;
- Act 2: an explanation of a selection of the grammar and vocabulary points covered in Act 1.
In addition, each fifth lesson of the series (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.) takes the form of an episode of a soap opera, Verano Español featuring a Spanish-Scottish family and their adventures while spending a summer in Spain. 90% of the soap opera is in Spanish, and learners will spot many of the constructions and idiomatic phrases taught in previous lessons in context within Verano Español.
Episodes 1-30 feature Alba from Barcelona. In the final season of Show Time Spanish (episodes 31-40), the native speakers are from a variety of Latin American countries including Colombia, Mexico and Chile.
What does a lesson involve?
Each lesson is based around a 20-25 minute recording featuring the elements described above. These audio lessons can be downloaded from the main Radio Lingua site at no cost. The additional materials for each lesson include the following elements:
- comprehensive lesson notes which include a full transcript of the conversation and intermedio, notes on the vocabulary and grammar used, and additional information about the topic covered;
- the ‘encore’ podcast and notes which pick up on some of the constructions and expressions of the main lesson and test the learners on their understanding.
Possible uses
Show Time Spanish is very much aimed at senior students of Spanish who have been studying the language for some time. Given the regular structure of each episode, it would be possible to use only the conversation part in class for listening practice, and allow students to listen to the grammar explanations at home.
Like our other courses, Show Time Spanish lends itself to cover lessons for senior students, or for situations where split-level teaching takes place teachers need to differentiate learning among different groups.
Since a full script is provided for our soap opera Verano Español, schools may consider using this script to put on a performance of the complete play. This would provide an excellent opportunity for senior students to build their confidence in using the language, having learned the constructions and idiomatic expressions contained in the script through the lessons. Radio Lingua Schools is actively looking for a school to pilot the Verano Español script as a play. If you’re interested, please get in touch!
