Pupils in P1 at St Mark’s Primary, North Ayrshire, recently took part in an animation activity in which they painted characters for a Pirate Story and then animated these characters in the iWork application Keynote.

Animated Storybooks with 5 Year-Olds

We recently ran a workshop with Primary 1 pupils in St Mark’s Primary in Irvine, North Ayrshire, which combined a range of curricular areas and allowed the children involved to create their own animations. Working with their teachers and teaching assistants, the pupils wrote pirate stories, and each child painted a picture linked to the story.

This project did not involve stop motion animation: instead we used the animation features in the presentation package Keynote to animate the characters and record voiceovers. This strategy worked extremely well with the children and the results are excellent. The final “animated storybooks” can be viewed using the links below:
